Edgar Dohmann's Party Mix

_______________________________________________

If you like Party Mix snacks (aka Trail Mix, Texas Trash, Chex Mix, etc), you are sure to like this recipe. Even if you don't, you very well might after trying this one. This recipe makes a LOT, so it is ideal for large parties or for gifts. Just pack some in a decorative tin, put a bow on it, and you have a simple gift that is sure to please.

Ingredients Directions
Dry Ingredients:
1 box Corn Chex
1 box Rice Chex
1 box Wheat Chex
1 box Cinnamon Chex
1 box Honey Nut Chex
1 box Golden Grahams
1 box Crispix
3 cups Honey roasted peanuts
2 cups mixed nuts
2 cups pecan halves
4 cups corn chips
4 cups mini pretzel shapes
2 small cans shoestring potatoes

Basting Mix (per batch):
1/2 cup cooking oil
1/8 cup Worcestershire sauce
1-1/2 tablespoon Tabasco sauce
1 tablespoon Seasoned salt

Extra Ingredients:
peanut M&Ms
almond M&Ms
Mix the dry ingredients together in a large container (such as a canning pot). Then pour as much as possible into a large roasting pan. The recipe should make enough for 2 or 3 such batches, depending on the size of your roasting pan.

Mix the Basting Mix ingredients in a shaker bottle, sprinkle about 1/4 of the basting mix over the dry ingredients in the roasting pan and bake at 200 deg F for 2 hours, stirring and basting with the remaining basting mix every 30 minutes. Sprinkle a handful or two of peanut and almond M&Ms over the mix at the same time as the last basting. Cool and stir in air-tight containers.

Use all of the basting mix in the shaker bottle with each batch that you process in this manner. If you have a very large baking pan that can accommodate the entire dry ingredients at once, then you should double the Basting Mix ingredients for such a large, single batch.

VARIATIONS:

  1. For a smaller quantity, reduce or eliminate 2 or 3 of the cereal ingredients. Do not eliminate the honey-based ingredients as these are key to the distinctive taste of this recipe.

  2. For a larger quantity, double one or more cereal ingredients or use additional cereals of your choice. You can also vary the quantities of nuts, chips, and pretzels depending on personal preferences. Macadamia nuts are also a tasty addition

  3. Reduce the hot sauce in the basting mix if you prefer a milder taste.

We hope you enjoy this recipe as much as we do. We would love to hear how your party mix turned out - especially if you have additional variations to suggest -- you can contact us at edgar at dohmann.com .
